PRIMARY OBJECTIVES
As a Phlebotomist, you will work collaboratively as part of the team to provide efficient, effective operation of the collection service, while demonstrating behaviour that reflects the values of the company. Your goal is to provide a professional customer service link between health professionals, their patients and the laboratory. Teamwork and cooperation between all stakeholders is also a primary focus.
Our Phlebotomist role involves:
• Being the first point of contact for patients and other visitors to the collection room
• Taking blood from patients and performing a range of other testing and specimen collection
• Ensuring all patient documentation is completed accurately and efficiently, to facilitate the flow of specimens to the laboratory for pre-analytical and analytical testing
• Being responsible for registering patients, specimens and charging information into the computer system as appropriate
• Assisting in the maintenance and improvement of systems and procedures so the department functions as effectively and efficiently as possible
• Being responsible for the appearance of the collection rooms
• Being part of a positive team environment for the whole department
• Participates in roster as required
Key Responsibilities Performance Measures
Technical Work: Ø Completes collections and testing in a professional, efficient, timely and safe manner
Ø Ensures specimens are correct and specimen documentation is completed and accurate
Ø Ensures specimens are appropriately prepared prior to being sent to the laboratory, in a timely and accurate manner, from meeting the patient to the specimen moving into the laboratory for processing
Ø Ensures correct and timely billing – including self-requests, immigration and other non-funded services
Ø Accounts for all monies in the rooms, including money received and paid by patients, and petty cash
Ø Ensures the collection room is secured when unattended
Ø Ensures the patient waiting area is clean, tidy, safe for the public, meets the branding standards for the organisation, and has appropriate signage and patient information
Ø Maintains office equipment, stationery and other collection room stocks
Ø Ensures waiting times are kept to a minimum
Ø Facilitates courier pick-ups and drop offs at the collection room
Ø Observes all requirements pertaining to the performance of phlebotomy duties, for example, accreditation standards and patient code of rights
Customer Service: Ø Ensures all patients receive a high standard of care and quality of service
Ø Provide a polite, courteous and prompt response to patient requests or enquiries
Ø All visitors are welcomed in a warm, professional and culturally sensitive manner
Ø Provides a safe customer service in all aspects of phlebotomy and specimen collection
Ø Demonstrates a high level of technical competency by developing and maintaining skills in phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures and complies with the Patient Services methods and procedure manual
Ø Uniform is clean, tidy and worn correctly as per the uniform policy
Ø Work areas are hygienic, safe, and portray a professional appearance to customers
Ø Refers any difficult customer problems or complaints to the Patient Services Manager to ensure customer satisfaction
Communication: Ø Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal communication skills
Ø Communicates in a professional and effective manner with all staff and customers
Ø Communicates significant findings appropriately
Ø Presents information concisely and correctly
Ø Maintains records in an easily accessible form
Ø Participates in departmental meetings and discussions. Be pro-active in contributing ideas and for continuous improvements
Quality Management: Ø Understands and follows laboratory policies and procedures including quality assurance requirements
Ø Ensures the ongoing delivery of quality services with continuous improvement processes, and liases with other staff to ensure quality management requirements are dealt with in a timely manner
Ø Advises the Patient Services Manager or the Quality Manager on all matters relating to Quality Management including any information which may impact on the services the company provides
Ø Ensures that any instances of un-ethical behaviour are reported to the Patient Services Manager or the Quality Manager
Continuing Competence: Ø Maintain required competencies to be registered as a Phlebotomist
Ø Participates in staff development programs and seminars to maintain competency
Ø Participate fully and proactively in individual performance planning and developing, including preparing and participating in objective setting, progress and assessment discussions
Health and Safety: Ø Complies with all health and safety requirments and pactices detailed in the Health and Safety Manual and Standard Operating Procedures
Ø Safety Manual is signed off as understood
Ø Alerts the Manager or department’s Health and Safety Rep of any potential hazards and recommends any improvements
Ø All workplace safety incidents and injuries are recorded and reported to the Manager immediately
Ø Ensure company equipment, premises, vehicles and immediate work arears are kept in a hygienic, tidy and safe condition
Ø Speed limits and all other road code rules are adhered to
Other Duties Ø Performs any other reasonable tasks that may be requested from your manager in a timely, accurate, competent and professional manner
Senior Phlebotomist – Key Responsibilities
Mentoring New Phlebotomy Staff: Ø New Phlebotomists are adequately trained so that at the end of their initial training, they have the skills and knowledge to perform competently
Ø Mentors new phlebotomy staff during their training as required by the Training Coordinator
Ø Mentoring is carried out to a high standard and supports skill development in new staff
Ø Provide support to the existing centre team
Ø Ensuring administrative duties are delegated to staff
